In the book, Mondrian, Breitner, Sluijters e.a. De onstuitbare verzamelaar Esser by M. Jonkman and J. de Raad, it was suggested that this painting was a portrait of Mondrian painted by Torres-García. However, the two artists did not meet until the year after this work was created (Jonkman, M. and J. de Raad. Mondrian, Breitner, Sluijters e.a. De onstuitbare verzamelaar Esser. Zwolle: Laren, 2005, p. 54)
