Although this painting has been published with the title, Paisaje de España, the scene depicted is most likely Villefranche-sur-Mer, as suggested by the sign in French on the building which reads "epicerie." Joaquín Torres-García often looked back to photographs, postcards, and sketches from earlier moments in his life when creating paintings, particularly during the 1940s following his return to Uruguay.
