The Russian composer Shostakovich wrote his Symphony No. 7 in C major, Op. 60 in 1941. The composition, titled "Leningrad" was created in the first year of the Nazi invasion of the Soviet Union. The first movement was dedicated to the memory of the heroes who sacrificed their lives so that justice and reason might triumph.
In the image reproduced in the Pereda reference listed below, the hammer and sickle, the red star, and the words "Leningrad" and "U.R.S.S." do not appear. The artist's family temporarily covered these details with gouache during the military dictatorship in Uruguay.
